A quitclaim transfers whatever you have. It promises nothing.

Quitclaim Press publishes crime fiction about land — who was moved, who got paid, and whose name ended up on the deed. Our first line is set on the South Side of Chicago, on ground that no longer exists.

They handed out the paper first. The wrecking ball came later.

They moved him twice off the same ground before he was twenty-one.

In Bronzeville in 2005 they are tearing down what is left of the Ida B. Wells and building Oakwood Shores on the other side of Pershing, and nobody is asking where the people went. Maurice “Reese” Kemp went where they all went — south, to the Hundreds, eight miles from the only ground he knows. But he works Bronzeville every day, and he is twenty-two, and he is smart enough to see what everybody else is missing: the feds took the men who ran this ground a year ago and nobody has been able to put it back together since.

He puts it back together. Corner by corner, building by boarded building, running weight north on the Ryan with a discipline the block has never seen from a man his age.

But money has to go somewhere. And when a developer named Solomon Pharr sells him a vacant lot four blocks west down Pershing from the tower he was raised in, it feels like coming home.

About Quitclaim Press

A quitclaim deed hands over whatever interest you may have in a piece of land, and warrants nothing — not even that you ever owned it. It is the quietest document in the county building and it moves more ground than any other.

Quitclaim Press publishes crime fiction where the land is the crime. Not the trade, not the corner, not the case — the parcel. Who was moved off it, who was paid for it, whose signature is on the page, and what got built on top.

We are a sibling imprint to 414 Press — same owner, separate house, separate catalogue. Where 414 Press publishes Milwaukee, Quitclaim publishes Chicago. Both publish Marquis Cole. Neither publishes anything comfortable.

Real neighborhoods, streets, developments and institutions may be named. No real officer, official, developer or resident is depicted or identifiable.
